Something about bitumen shingles

Shingles are outer roof coverings, meaning they are exposed to all weather conditions. This outer roof covering contain three basic components that provide long-term durability and protection: a base material, a specially formulated asphalts coating and a surfacing of weather resistant mineral granules, flakes of slate or a metal foil.
Bitumen shingles are an interesting type of roofing material with two major benefits – they are strong and flexible:
  • durable solid and resistant to extreme weather conditions like frost and tropical heat and therefore may be used in any climate.
  • flexible and adjustable and therefore demonstrate their benefits on complicated roofs where ease of application and low wastage make them the ideal roofing material.
Shingles are available in a wide variety of types, colours and shapes. Just to name a few: square shingles, round shingles, self-adhesive shingles, triangular shingles, hexagonal shingles, laminated shingles. This large range makes it easy to select the type of shingle which perfectly matches the style of every building.

Standardization
The European norm EN 544 defines the specifications of bitumen shingles (composition, minimum mass of bitumen, geometrical and mechanical characteristics and durability), as well as the corresponding testing methods.
The current applicable version dates back to May 2006 and is available from each national normalisation body.

CE-marking
CE marking falls under a legal constraint resulting from the European Construction Products Directive; it aims at attesting the conformity of shingles with the hEN 544 standard. The CE marking of bitumen shingles has been mandatory in the European Union since October 2007.

Voluntary certification
As a voluntary procedure , the certification of industrial products enables manufacturers to achieve from an independent certification body a certificate of compliance for its products with a system of reference (characteristics, levels of performance, testing procedures). Such a procedure exists in some European countries (for example in France with the “Marque NF”).
